The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency has published its final rule that places a more-restrictive classification on hydrocodone combination products, or HCPs. Hydrocodone is a narcotic pain reliever.
Effective, October 6th 2014, any and all Hydrocodone containing products will be re-classified to a Schedule-II Narcotic status.
What this means:
- Prescriptions containing Hydrocodone will no longer be faxed, phoned or emailed to the pharmacies. Each prescription must be handwritten and given to the patient to bring to the pharmacy.
- No refills will be allowed. This will not allow partial filling of a prescription due to the fact that the remainder of the prescription will be considered a “refill”. The remainder of a partially filled prescription will be voided.
- Any active refills/prescription written before October 6th, 2014 will be honored until the refills are complete or the prescription has expired. (Scheduled prescriptions expire 6 months from the written date).
